In the 1970s and 1980s, Hardy created his tattoo stencils using rice paper and hectograph pencils. This particular stencil was made by Ed Hardy in the 1980s for a rib piece and was inspired by an image that appeared in issue #7 of The Japanese Association of Tattoo Artists and Fans newsletter.
