Sailor George Fosdick settled into Portland, Oregon in the early 1900s and soon became the city’s leading tattooist. He got his Sailor needle-name, and probably his early tattoo skills, from being a Merchant seaman. In Portland Fosdick settled on legendary Burnside Street near the Willamette River where he had plenty of opportunities for tattooing. Several full body suits are credited to Sailor George but few were as grand as the work he did for Captain Elvy in the 1940s. Seen here is a rare double-sided postcard showing Fosdick’s tattooing skills with notes on the back.
