Back in the acetate stencil days there were a couple of ways of cutting stencils. With this stencil, Marquand sanded the acetate with fine sandpaper to rough it up a bit, the acetate would then be placed on the design with the sanded side up, the design would then be traced or drawn on the roughed up side with a pencil, the acetate would then a flip over and the stencil would then be cut. In later years many tattooists bypassed this drawing on the acetate stage.
