The 1884 presidential election in the United States was between Republication James G. Blaine and Democratic Grover Cleveland. Puck Magazine hired Gillam to slander Blaine with a series of illustration showing him with his political sins tattooed on him. The dirty tricks campaign worked and Cleveland was elected. This illustration is from the May 7, 1884 edition of Puck.
